Overall this is the best way to play Rome 1. Now that 31 factions are possible in the engine, as well as more regions, you can expect an experience like no other when it releases. Roma Surrectum is a mod which extends the campaign map, adds factions, and overall improved the original experience. Currently there is work on a remaster for a famous mod, Roma Surrectum. You can expect to have the same enjoyment as the original, with some benefits. Sadly the battle ai is unimproved, which was the weakest part of the 2004 release. They added medieval2 merchants, overhauled every piece of art in the game, improved campaign ai, and increased modding potential. The amazing thing about the remaster is that it allows you to toggle back to the original settings if you wish.
I will say that if you are expecting a remake, you will be disappointed. What the remaster did was truly faithful to the original.
